Cold Weather Ahead!

Tips for a successful Installation…

All self-adhesive vinyl including perforated window films have a minimum application temperature and low temperatures can make installation difficult, if not impossible. If temperatures are below the minimum application temperature the adhesive can become hard, resulting in the material failing to bond effectively to the glass.

Extensive testing has shown that Contra Vision® perforated window films can be applied reliably at 5°C/41°F.

This is considerably lower than most other perforated window films, which typically have minimum application temperatures of 10°C/50°F.

In extreme climates, temperatures may never reach our minimum application of 5°C/41°F. Graphics applied to the inside of a window have many advantages including allowing for colder weather applications. For Applied Inside one-way vision graphics we have Performance Clear for long-term applications or Campaign Clear  for short-term applications.

The minimum application temperature of 5°C/41°F refers to the temperature of the glass, not the air temperature, as the temperature of the glass can remain lower than the surrounding air. We recommend that in cold weather Contra Vision® perforated windows films are applied in the afternoon, preferably after the windows have been warmed by the sun. Temperature should not drop below 0°C/32°F within 2 hours of application and not drop below -5°C/23°F within 24 hours of application. The use of a heat gun to warm the surface of a window is not recommended as this may cause the glass to crack.

In the winter months storage temperatures can significantly drop and we recommend that the material is warmed to room temperature well before application. The same applies when transporting graphics, the material being allowed to reach room temperature before application, particularly if left in a cold vehicle overnight.

During application, ensure that the surface is dry and free from any condensation. Thoroughly clean the surface from dust, grease or any contamination that could affect the adhesion of the material. Do not use a chemical adhesion promoter. Application must be dry, ensuring that the graphics are cut back from the edge of the window by 1-3mm (3/16”-1/8”) and that all joins are butt joins. Do not overlap. We recommend that the graphics are not cleaned for a minimum of 24 hours after installation.

Blue is the colour

A new livery on the Huddersfield FC Team bus was recently unveiled, resulting in a striking end result which will definitely attract attention wherever it goes.

The attention however, will not result in any invasion of privacy for the travelling players and staff due to a superbly executed application of vinyl by the Stoke-on-Trent based printing company Graphix.

Graphix managed to apply 140metres of both solid and Contra Vision® perforated film in just two days, but this is even more impressive when you notice the accuracy of colour matching between the two different films.

Huddersfield Terriers Team Coach Wrap

Contra Vision was chosen as the perfect solution to ensure accurate graphic reproduction and long lasting performance. Graphix used Performance Black on White in 40% (WBPAG40) together with an Optically Clear Overlaminate (CL50CY) which provides protection from abrasion and washing chemicals whilst preventing dirt and water from entering the perforated holes.

Getting the colours right on perforated film can prove to be a challenge but Contra Vision’s White on Black film is supplied on their patented Contra Vision® Grayliner. This liner ensures printers are able to achieve the most accurate colour matching result. The grey colour, visible through the perforated holes, creates a realistic background to show how the printed image will really look on a window. It avoids the washed out appearance created by a white liner and ensures the final result is right first time.

Definite Premier League quality.

404 Store Not Found…

If you’re in Chicago, Boston, NYC, Seattle, Philadelphia or Denver you may have seen some bright blue store fronts stating ‘404 store not found’. This attention-grabbing stunt is by US cell phone service provider Visible (a Verizon owned start-up company).

Installation by Beyond Printing, Hempstead, NY

You’ll be familiar with the ‘404’ error code when the server can’t find what has been requested. The same goes for Visible’s stores. They do not exist. They have no visible locations. They are INVISIBLE. If you do stumble across one you will be greeted with the below message.

404 Store not found

Even though these pop-up stores are not occupied Performance White on Black has been used on the glazing.

Contra Vision® Perforated Window Film is the ideal product for vacant retail units. You can promote the commercial opportunity to potential investors with appealing designs whilst maintaining a clear view out into the surrounding area. Renovation work can also go unnoticed but natural light can still flood in. Something which is key when painting the inside of a store.

We offer a range of transparency options but for an application such as this we recommend our 20% transparency.

SWS Signage and Starleaton bring Uni past to life…

Original Post by Jake Nelson (www.print21.com/au)

SWS Signage, together with media supplier Starleaton, has created an innovative solution to hide building works inside the University of Newcastle, printing one way films with images that reflect the heritage of building.

To hide the interior refurbishment works, the university turned to SWS Signage, based in nearby Sandgate. SWS printed archival photos from the 1920s and ’30s onto Performance HD White on Black Perforated Window Film, designed for one-way viewing. “They wanted a solution that created some privacy for them, and also made sure that the artwork displayed in the windows reflected the heritage of the building,” said Jay Miller, sales executive at SWS.

According to Miller, Performance HD White on Black is a step up from previous one-way signage.

“One of the issues with the material we were using before was that, due to the way it was produced and the width of the holes, the image quality was not as great as customers expected it to be. The quality and colours we can now use in the artwork aren’t as limited as with previous materials.”

John Buitenkamp, product manager at Starleaton, agrees that Performance HD White on Black is a big improvement over other one-way films, with high-end brands like Gucci preferring it to its predecessors.

“Upmarket brands complain that because of the perforations, their brands are not displayed properly,” he said. “The HD film is a new design which uses more holes of a smaller diameter. This makes the image more visible, while still permitting people inside to see out.”

The university has given the result the thumbs-up, with a spokesperson telling Print21 that SWS had delivered a high-quality project, on time and on budget. “The images, reproduced and installed by SWS Signage, make a charming feature of all the ground floor windows and doors, and have received much appreciation from the community,” they said.

A theatrical ‘projection mapping’ show opens the Macallan’s new distillery

Contra Vision® perforated window film enables the delivery of an extravagant projection mapping display that has helped put The Macallan’s new distillery on the map.

Projection mapping is a technology which can turn often irregularly shaped objects, into a display surface for video projection. Whole buildings appear animated and when combined with audio content the experience is highly engaging.

When you project onto any building, windows are often a challenge. Rood Signs were tasked with fitting over 650 sqm of Campaign White on Black in 30% transparency to the entire glazed surfaces of The Macallan’s new distillery for a projection mapped grand opening event.

Macallan New Distillery Launch

The Macallan’s new distillery is one of the most creative, ornate and complex timber structures in the world. A total of 380,000 components went to make up the incredible structure which sits on the Easter Elchies estate near Craigellachie in Moray. Camouflaged under a 14,000 sqm roof of turf and meadow flowers to blend in with the rolling hillside, the total cost for the production facility and visitor centre was $180 million.

A notable building such as this deserves a memorable opening ceremony and marketing specialists, Genie, produced a week of events for the building’s launch with a spectacular finale delivered for 450 international guests. The evening show included a dramatic unveiling of the distillery with Projection Artworks futuristic show, projected onto the vast building.

The use of Contra Vision also ensured an unobstructed view out was maintained for those inside the building. The polar white colour is designed to function perfectly in such projection applications. Installation was trouble free and the show went brilliantly.

Macallan New Distillery Launch

One of the great things about a projection mapping event is that the moment the projectors are turned off, the building is instantly available for its working role. Thanks to the Contra Vision element of the installation, removal of the glazing’s screens was also quick and easy.

Not a trace of the specialist adhesive that’s supplied as standard on the film remains.

Memories of the stunning event, however, will endure for years to come.

Translucent White – Definitely fit for purpose

David Lloyd - Contra Vision Backlite on the Rotunda

Contra Vision’s ‘Performance Translucent White’ perforated window film, was recently used by Ensign to excellent effect on the David Lloyd Gym at the Rotunda in Kingston, London

On such a landmark building it was vital that the graphics could be clearly seen by passers-by. However, more importantly, David Lloyd wanted to ensure customers training inside the gym still had plenty of light passing through the glass-fronted gymnasium and could also enjoy the view out to the street below. This is a vibrant area in the evening and a key reason so many people choose the gym for their training.

Performance Translucent White 20% was the ideal choice. Offering amazing image quality 24/7, this film is designed to allow light from inside the building to pass through, giving an extra “pop” to the graphics at night.

The installation posed many challenges. Before everything could move ahead, pedestrian access, an in-depth health and safety risk assessment and working at height implications were all considered and the relevant permits obtained.

The gym is directly above Kingston’s busy tube station, so closure of the pavement and limiting pedestrian access, meant that the installation team could only work between the hours of 11:00 at night till 6:00 in the morning. On top of this, they were working at a height of 21m and had to consider how night time temperatures could affect a successful installation. Again, Translucent White was more than up to the job, having a minimum installation temperature lower than many products on the market.

Printed using a Vutek GS3200 the completed job delighted both David Lloyd, the passers by and a host of hard working gym-goers.
